At Dachshund Rescue South Florida, we are dedicated to rehoming dogs that have found themselves without a family, and the loving faces below are why we do what we do. Every doxie that enters our rescue has a unique story, and we are committed to ensuring the next chapter is their best one yet. All of our dogs stay in foster homes while in our care so we can truly learn their personalities and match each one with a forever home where they can shine. Our adoption process is designed to connect each dog’s needs with a loving family, and every dog goes home fully vetted—spayed or neutered, up to date on shots, treated for internal and external parasites, and examined by a licensed veterinarian. How Much is that Doggie on the Website?
Our adoption donations are done on a sliding scale based on age. We take a higher adoption donation on younger dogs which are easier to place and then a lower one on older dogs which are harder to place. In neither case does the adoption donation result in a "profit" to DRSF as on average the vetting cost of our dogs is over $1,900 each.

Adoption Donations
DRSF's goal is to find the best match between our dogs and adopters. Key elements include an effort to ensure dogs are placed in homes that are the best match based on energy level and needs to help protect our dogs from ending up in a situation of being homeless again in their lives. As such, we require that applicants age 75 and above have a co-applicant at the time of the adoption who is willing to also sign DRSF's co-signer contract agreeing to take in the adopted dog should the primary adopter become unable to care for the dog or be sure the dog is returned to DRSF.
Below are the ages of dogs that we will adopt to those 75 years of age and more. These policies are in place to ensure that the matches between adopters and dogs are the best we can do for the dogs. Please keep in mind that we put these policies in place because we have found they are in the best interest of the dogs we rescue.
The following are the ages of dogs that we will offer for adoption for seniors:

Adopters that are 75-79 years old- dogs that are 6 years or older.

Adopters that are 80 and over-dogs that are 8 years or older.
Shelter vs. Rescue Fees
The shelter that I have been looking at adopts dogs for $75. Why are your adoption fees so high for younger dogs?
Rescues take dogs regardless of age, temperament, and medical condition which lead to higher average medical costs than shelters who can choose to put down a dog for those very reasons.

Our average vetting per dog is nearly $1,900 (we take in many sick and injured dogs) and our average adoption fee is $350

Dogs with temperament issues can run into the hundreds for trainers who otherwise would have no chance of being adopted due to being labeled "aggressive" during shelter intake. (Wouldn't you be a bit aggressive if you were scared?)

Dogs in our foster care receive flea and heartworm medication (There are almost no discounts for these medications for rescue and cost us the same as they cost you if you already have a dog per month x however many dogs we have in our care)

One back surgery or treating strays who have been hit by cars can easily run into the $7,000+ range .
