Fostering: The Vital Bridge to a Forever Home
Foster homes serve dogs not yet seen on social media. While the average stay is 60 days, seniors and special needs dogs often stay longer. You always have the final say on which dog fits your home, committing to them until their perfect match is found.
What DRSF Offers
We provide everything your foster needs to start fresh: a bed, blanket, leash, harness, all vetting, and medications. You focus on the healing.
Your Part is the Best
You provide the food and the love. Your job is to offer belly rubs, patience, and hugs, helping them learn how to be a beloved family pet.

The Journey to Becoming a Foster Hero
We rely on passionate individuals to provide temporary, loving homes for our dachshunds. Our four-step process ensures the best possible match for both you and your foster dogle.

Application Form
Start your journey by completing our comprehensive online questionnaire so we can learn about your home.

Home Interview
A dedicated volunteer will visit (virtually or in person) to ensure a safe and loving space for our rescues.

Final Approval
Once confirmed, you'll join our official roster of life-savers and receive our comprehensive foster handbook.

Perfect Pairing
We work closely with you to find a dachshund whose personality and needs match your lifestyle perfectly.
Foster FAQs
We know you have questions about the foster process. Here are some answers to common inquiries to help you get started on your journey as a foster hero.
What if I want to adopt my foster dog?
That’s okay too! We have had plenty of “failed fosters” (a term of endearment). Let our Foster Coordinator know as soon as you can. Once promised to an approved adopter, foster homes are no longer able to adopt.
Do foster dogs already have foster homes?
If you see a dog on our social media, that dog already has a foster home. We work with our volunteers to place dogs who have not been introduced to the public yet.
How long is the foster commitment?
Commitment is “until dog is placed.” We average about 60 days, but some dogs—especially sick, injured, or seniors—take longer to find their perfect match.
Can I say no to a dog?
Yes. You always have the right to refuse taking any dog you are asked to consider for fostering.
