Updates :)

5.20.2009
A little punch drunk from anesthesia (looking uncharacteristically sappy with is tongue  hanging out and his eyes kind of droopy)  --  Hercules suddenly perked up when he heard the characteristic squeak of a plush toy.  Below you can see that our little tough guy is ever-ready (even when half out of it!) to meet the test of a squeaky toy HEAD ON.  This one just happens to be bigger than he is!
Here is Hercules all surrounded by new toys and tucked to the super cushiest bed that Susan F bought him for the ride to Daryl’s.  Daryl will for Hercules through his long road to recovery…which will be even longer if Daryl doesn’t put him down to walk ever!  (This morning we also talked about getting Hercules a little pool so he could do some water therapy)!
5.24.2009 - A Setback....
Hercules clings to life tonight …At Pet ER in Miami, poor Hercules faces an uphill climb.  Listed as critical, Hercules can not breathe easily outside the oxygen chamber.  He is fighting pneumonia with a virulent bacteria that probably infected his lung via a badly neglected infection in his mouth.  Despite having undergone dental surgery 5 days after he came to DRSF (thru a medical release from MDAS) the infection was probably laying in wait in his lungs.

Unfortunately the steroids he needed for the back injury he also had when he came out of MDAS that kept him from walking … decreased his body’s ability to fight off the infection that was hiding.

So tonight as Hercules needs all the positive energy and prayers we can muster.  The next 48 hours will determine his ability to fight off the infection.  He is now receiving 24 hour care with IV antibiotics, cough suppressant and meds to keep him relaxed.  He is sleeping comfortably but raises his little head whenever one of his fans comes by for endorsement.

He now has his favorite furry blue shoe toy for comfort and some fresh chicken breast for dinner (he still has a good  appetite – sooo doxi!)   By the time his treatment is complete, Hercules care may top $3,000.  But with everyone pulling for him – we know Hercules will live up to his name!

5.26.2009 - 11 PM - A Turn for the Better...

As of this evening, Hercules has been off oxygen since 7:00am. His breathing is getting stronger.  He will stay in the ER another nite and if all goes well he will be able to move to Alton Rd tomorrow for a few days of nebulizer treatments.

While more hospital care will be needed and then rehab...Our little fighter tonite may now have a real chance at the quality life he so deserves.  All depends on how he makes it through the night...

Dachshund Rescue of South Florida is a foster based 501(c)(3) rescue who helps hotdogs regardless of age, health, or behavioral issues find new homes after being in a shelter, as a stray out on the streets, or owner surrendered.

We take our work very seriously and screen our potential forever families thoroughly to ensure that our dogs will never have to worry or want for anything ever again.

Our mission is to educate people who may be unfamiliar with rescue and the time, love, and compassion that goes into identifying a little one in a shelters through getting them settled into their new forever home and why choosing to rescue a dog can be one of the most rewarding things a family can choose to do.

If you are looking to add a dachshund to your family we would love to work with you.  We have done our best to help explain the process and share some our favorite "happy tales" from our former dogs with their new forever families.  We are happy to answer any questions you may have and we are looking forward to meeting you!

Rescue is never easy but seeing the level of abuse that left this tiny little angel so much in need … it either crushes you or strengthens your resolve.  Our little boy has a long recovery ahead of him including probably more than a $1,000 in nmedical care.  But this strong little guy’s wounds will heal, his hair will re-grow (at least partially) and surgery will repair his mouth which, in turn, will enable him to eat better and regain his health.  Even this early in his saga it is easy to tell that someday soon this ‘experienced adult doxie’ will go from a dog whose condition makes you cry …to a dog whose will to survive and whose impish good looks will bring him scores of admirers.
On May 14, these tiny eyes, emaciated body and protruding bones turned 4 very experienced rescuers into physically and emotionally-drained broken hearts. His fragile and skinny 9lb body, watering eye, bald tummy and tail, is in tremendous pain from a horribly  rotten teeth and a strained muscle in his back that keeps him from walking. 10+ years of neglect obviously had taken a major toll on this guy but it all seemed to fade away before our eyes as he melted into the comfort of a fuzzy bed and burrowed under the warmth of a soft blanket.

And here our little giant-fighter leave Alton Road – his home for the past 5 days where he received intensive care for malnourishment, skin infections, severe dental disease and lower back injury.  After 5 days and much love from his daily hospital visitors Roberta and Fabricio who cuddled and walked him …Hercules moved on to a nearby foster home.
The good news is that his foster family has fallen in love with him and he has found his forever home. The bad news is that his kennel cough has returned with a vengance with the possability of turning into pneumonia and had to be moved from Alton Road to the Pet Emergency Center in Miami where he could be monitored 24x7 in an oxygen tent (or box as the case may be). Vet costs approaching $2,000....

8:30 PM update from Foster Mom:

Just called and the doctor was busy to answer the phone but the    "receptionist told me that Hercules is sleeping and is stable...
Our little angel..."

5.25.2009 - More Setbacks....
5.27.2009 - Discharged For Outpatient Treatment
Our little hero was discharged from Pet ER today and will be receving additional nebulizer treatments as an outpaitent at Alton Road Animal Hospital in Maimi Beach.  Extra special thanks to Foster Mom Daryl for taking such good care of him!!!
6.1.2009 - Safe at home...
Safe at home and knowing that he is loved, Hercules continues to get better every day.  He still has a bit of pain from his leg and is facing some hurdles on his road to good health, but love can cure almost anything and we are grateful to all those who have contributed to his care!
