In mid November of 2011, Ruben found himself on the streets with many very big strikes against him.....he was a stray, he was alone, he was out on the streets. But that was not all he had going against him, he was a senior, and he was also a black dog. These things alone made his future look very glim, but that was not all....he had a mouth full of teeth that were so horribly neglected, infected, and painful, that he could barely eat due to the pain. On November 19th, his luck began to change for a bit.....
Ruben came to DRSF on November 19 and was taken immediately to our vet who after a check of his teeth, declared that they were the worst that he had ever seen.
Ruben made it through his surgery like a champ, but despite our best efforts, none of his teeth were able to be saved. Like so many of our dogs, the surgery did not phase him, and shortly thereafter, our sedate older gentleman came to life after getting some much needed
nourishment. Ruben seemed to actually get younger, day by day and was soon running and playing like a puppy, enjoying a "childhood" of feeling safe, loved, and cared for, that he possily never had. His eyes got younger, and he had a darling smile, complete with tongue hanging out, that was too charming to resist.
All was going well for Ruben until the evening of January 6th, when Lenny, his Foster Dad, reported to DRSF that he was showing signs of losing control of his back legs, appeared to be in pain and wasn't eating. Since we know the signs of IVDD all too well, he was immediately taken to Alton road for anti-inflammatories with fingers crossed.
By the morning of January 7th, it was obvious that he was in trouble and Lenny and Angie got him to Dr. Wong at South East Vetrinary Neurology who rated him 4 out of 5 on a severity scale, but he still had deep pain which was a small good sign. The DRSF team could not say no to that face after such a sweet little guy had fought so far for the life he deserved and the decision was made to take him to surgery.
This is where you come in....we need your help to cover Ruben's surgery so that we are there for the next doxie who needs us. No donation is too small, and each donation is fully tax deductible. We are a 100% volunteer team who does our rescue work after work, home, jobs, and families. We have no shelter and no over head, and every dollar doanted goes 100% to the dogs. The entire DRSF team thanks you, and most importantly, so does Ruben :)
Dodgerslist.com is a MUST READ for any doxie parent to have the information, treatment options, and knowedlge BEFORE your doxie goes down. Their message boards are an incredible resource of first hand information for people have been down the road before.
We have lost count as to how many DRSF doxies owe their mobility to Dr. Wong and South East Veterinary Neurology. Dr. Wong is one of fewer than 150 board-certified neurologists in the nation, and we are so proud and honored that he has a soft spot for doxies. Check out his website for some incredible stories of his patients, and the state of the art equipment he works with to make miracles for DRSF doxies!

The DRSF Team was crushed that despite the best medical care available, we were not able to help Ruben. Upon examining his spine during surgery, Dr. Wong found not a herniated disk that was causing Ruben's paralaysis, but a tumor that could not be removed due to its location. We made the difficult decision to let Ruben cross the bridge as we had no way of knowing how much time he had left, what his quality of life would be, and most importantly, if he would be in any pain.
We now find ourselves in the difficult situation of losing Ruben, but still

needing to fund his surgery. DRSF has done 5+ IVDD surgeries in the last year and at roughly $5,000 each, they are by far, our largest expense. We have always been there for any doxie who needed us, and want to continue to do so. While we could not provide the "Happily Ever After" we wanted so badly to provide for Ruben, we have many incredible stories of doxies whose dreams came true and have shared a few of them below.
If these stories bring a smile to your face, we graciously ask if you would consider donating to "Ruben's Fund" so that we are ready to help the next doxie in need.
Cindy
Came to DRSF after her family surrendered her to a shelter to be put down due to mammary tumors that went un-treated. Thanks to DRSF and our supporters, Cindy got the medical care she needed, happily all the tumors were benign, and found her Forever Mom Joanna a few months later!
The Miami 4
These four came to us after being found in South Dade County by a Police Officer. They had been out on their own for quite some time and all 4 were suffering from a horrible case of demodex mange. Our team jumped into action, all 4 were taken into foster care and started the long road back to heath. All have made a full recovery, and "The Miami 4" are now known as Enzo, Gia, Mona Lisa and Amadeus and are living their happily ever after!
Spartacus
Spartacus came to be a DRSF dog after finding himself in a South Florida Shelter after suffering a horrible trauma. The vets at the shelter went to extrodinary measures for him, and thanks to excellent vet care, and an incredible team of Foster Mom's skilled in wound care, Spartacus a.k.a. Sparky, made a full recovery and now lives on the West Cost with his Forever Family and writes his on FB page too!
