Before we introduce you to all of our adorable dachshunds looking for their forever homes, we would like to take a moment to give you some additional information about our dogs, what we do to get them ready for their forever homes and also what we look for in our forever families. The link to the dogs for adoption is at the bottom of the page, but please take the time to read the information below!
Thank You For Looking to Adopt!
R is for RESPONSIBILITY & RESPECT: Be mindful that you have committed to being responsible for another life and respectful that that life, however imperfect, is dependent upon you for a happy and healthy future
E is for EMPOWERED & EMPATHETIC: Feel empowered by this responsibility to fight for, and with, the dog to make it the best dog it can be but also be empathetic that its behaviors and health are the product of what it suffered before you.
S is for SAFETY & SECURITY: Ensure that your dog feels the safety and security it needs to become free of fear and secure enough to be itself. It is only through a true sense of safety & security that these dogs and their humans can begin to undo all that went before DRSF
C is for CARING & CAUSE: Remember that it is only though consistent love and caring (despite bad behaviors and health problems) that what is now unacceptable ...can be changed; it is because of this we are driven to rescue and adopt rescued dogs
E is for EVENTUALLY & EVERY: Pease keep in your heart and in your mind that eventually, often with a lot of love and hard work, EVERY DOG CAN BECOME A WONDERFUL AND LOVING FAMILY MEMBER AND COMPANION.
The Healing Power of Rescue
Almost all of our dogs come to us from county shelters where they have been passed over for adoption after being surrendered by their owners or picked up off the streets as strays, both of which can be very traumatic experiences for a dachshund. These dachshunds are often injured either physically or mentally when they are rescued, but at DRSF we are up for the challenge!
All DRSF dogs are seen by a vet, are up to date on their shots, and have had any other necessary treatment they may need. Prior to adoption, our dogs may undergo surgeries such as dental cleanings, spays, neuters, repair of broken bones or collapsed lungs, behavior training, nebulizer treatments, heartworm treatment, ringworm treatment, or rehabilitation such as water therapy and accupuncture....essentially whatever is needed to get them ready for their forever families. Lots and lots of love and care goes into each and every single one of our dogs, which is why we screen our potential forever families thoroughly.
The Perfect Forever Family
People come to us looking for the perfect dog, but we are looking for the perfect forever family! As we said above, we take our work VERY seriously and after so much love, care and expense has gone into each and every dachshund we care for, we don't let them to go any 'ole family! We look for many attributes in our forever families, including:
- Are looking for a dog that is a good match for the age and lifestyle of their family
- Understand the importance of and commit to regular vetting
- Understand the importance of nutrition and commit to feeding their dog a healthy diet
- Understand the "engineering flaws" of dachshunds and will care for their adopted dachshund in a means that will prevent IVDD
We regret to say that filling out an application does not guarantee placement of a dog with your family. We are also sorry to say that our dogs are not perfect. They may exhibit any or all of the following behavior:
- Tinkling/messing in the house
We cannot provide you with a perfect dog, but we can provide you a perfect soul that will return the love you give them tenfold.
Rescue is a commitment of love and a willingness to have the patience and understanding necessary to help a dog have a 2nd chance at a wonderful life.
