We love nothing more than matching up senior dogs with senior companions as they have so much to give each other. Often, senior citizens cannot enjoy the companionship of a dog due to inability to make a long term commitment or concern over being able to provide financially, but being a forever foster with DRSF eliminates all of that! If you know a senior who could benefit from a companion, please let us know!
We take in many senior dogs from local shelters as often owners surrender dogs at older ages due to medical issues, or just not wanting to care for them any longer. These dogs are the true reason for rescue, but present a special challenge in that due to their age, they can take longer to place than younger dogs and can often become "forever fosters".
Why Is There a Need for Such a Thing?
Why 2 and 4 Legged Seniors are a Perfect Match...
Senior dogs and senior humans are the perfect mach as they both have learned to enjoy the finer things in life and don't have time for any of that crazy puppy behavior! They understand the wavelength each is on and can enjoy each others company snuggling and reading a good book! Senior citizens often have the time available that younger families do not to devote to an older dog who is going through a difficult change of surroundings and in turn the dog can provide companionship and added opportunities for exercise and interactions with others!

Senior-to-Senior program is available to senior individuals who are interested in permanently fostering a dog who is either medically-needy or 12+ who might otherwise not find a forever home. While DRSF will care for the major medical needs of a dog in this program, it is our hope that the Foster home will be able to cover basic necessities including: food, care, heartworm & flea preventives which will allow DRSF to cover other dogs critical health needs. Additionally, dogs in this program will only be placed in homes that are centerally located close to DRSF medical facilities and long-term foster homes will ideally be able to assist DRSF in transporting the dog to & from medical appointments
Please see the attached letter below giving more details on the program! Families that are interested in applying for the program can fill out our application on the "Fostering" page on our site and can email any additional questions to info@dachshundrescuesouthflorida.com!
